Obligations
of ICADP * Participation in meeting held before each
visit to update visitors on any current issues at Menard, * Pontiac, Dwight, Tamms or IDOC and to discuss
upcoming visit. Participate in obtaining or packing items for next
visit, as requested by coordinators, in a timely manner. * Let the team know in a timely fashion if
you will not be coining on the next visit; do not cancel at the last
minute. * If you are driving, be available to car
pool. * Participate in the de-briefmg with the
administration following the visit. This includes working out with
the team coordinator how to conduct the de-briefing, insuring that
issues of importance are discussed, and time is not spent on frivolous
questions or complaints. * Participate in the group meeting (usually
over dinner) following the de-briefing. * Turn in requests, complaints, and comments
(including those not reported to the administration at the de-briefing)
concerning the well being of each prisoner visited, in a timely fashion,
to the appropriate person. (You should have a comment on everyone,
even if it is only that he was sleeping or that he did not feel like
visiting.) * It is important that we work towards a
sense of team solidarity that transcends individual differences among
us. The functions of the visiting team - to monitor conditions, be
present to the prisoners, listen to complaints and respond appropriately,
and advocate for prisoners' rights as human beings - can only be accomplished
through a cohesive group effort. * It is also appropriate and useful to report
prisoners' criticism of the coalition. On the other hand, it is not
constructive for team members to simply "bad mouth" the
coalition or engage in other conversations that are destructive to
the cohesiveness of the team or to individual prisoners. Last updated October 2001 Illinois Coalition to Abolish The Death Penalty ©2002 Illinois Coalition to Abolish The Death Penalty |
