Charles was sentenced to death under a flawed system:
Charles’ conviction rests on the testimony of a co-defendant who has a history of lying and had reason to frame Charles. No physical evidence links Charles to this crime. The state did not originally think this crime was worthy of the death penalty and was willing to give Charles a sentence of 60 years if he pleaded guilty. He refused.
