MESSAGE FROM THE SANT'EGIDIO COMMUNITY,
ON THE OCCASION Of THE WORLD ABOLITION DAY,
TO THE FRIENDS OF THE ILLINOIS COALITION
AGAINST THE DEATH PENALTY.
Dear President,
We are honoured to send through you, the warmest greetings from the Community of Sant'Egidio to all those who participate with you, in the spirit of peace, to the special event of March 1st , the day when you celebrate the World Abolition Day.
We thank God together for saving so many lives in Illinois and we appreciated very much all your efforts in this direction.
Our hope today is that we may -- in the close future -- celebrate the end of the death penalty in every state, all over the world.
We will keep on supporting each other while we continue to work together to spread the spirit of justice, in order to defend every Life.
I am sure our common commitment will grow, while we struggle with our bare, weak, harmless hands and with our voices, to convince people that death penalty is not justice, it does not heal the suffering hearts and that no human being deserves to be killed, notwithstanding the crime they committed.
We will commit ourselves more and more, with the Help of God, to demonstrate our friendship and closeness to the weakest, to the poorest, to those who are hopeless, to those who are sentenced to death.
For them and with them we will struggle together, so that every Life which is threatened may be saved.
Who saves one Life, saves the whole humanity!
