2003 Cunningham-Carey Award:
Heroes: Looking Death in the Eye
Coalition members and friends gathered on November 23, 2003 at the Winter Garden at the Harold Washington Library for the inaugural Cunningham-Carey Award celebration. The memories of two heroes of the abolition movement, ICADP Board members Dick Cunningham and Jack Carey, infused the event as their courageous efforts on behalf of defendants facing the death penalty were remembered. The 2003 Cunningham-Carey Award was bestowed upon abolition champion U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky, a tireless advocate for humane alternatives to capital punishment. A highlight of the program was the recitation by Maria Cunningham of a poem written in honor of the event by exonerated death row inmate, poet and ICADP Board member Delbert Tibbs.
