Op Ed in Southtown Star: Death Penalty Often Unfair to Murder Victims' Families

Gail Rice's op-ed appeared in the Oct. 17th Southtown Star discussing her experience with the death penalty after her brother was murdered 13 years ago. Gail is a long time supporter of abolition and is one of the guest speakers on ICADP's October downstate tour.

I have spent recent weeks traveling to different communities in Illinois to share my story in a speaking tour titled "Beyond Repair: True Stories of Illinois' Flawed Death Penalty." I am joining other speakers to share our experiences with the death penalty.

I've spoken alongside men who share their real-life horror stories of being innocent men sentenced to death. I tell what it is like losing a loved one to murder.

Nov. 12 will mark 13 years since the murder of my brother, Bruce VanderJagt, a Denver policeman, who was the first police officer in the United States to be killed in the line of duty by a skinhead. The killer's name was Matthaeus Jaehnig.

Take Action NOW! Write a Letter to your Legislator

Picture 4.png

Want to know how you can make a personal contribution to the campaign to repeal Illinois' death penalty? By writing a handwritten note to your legislator. It takes less than five minutes to do and it's a great way to take direct action against a broken and unjust capital punishment system. We simply cannot stress enough how much your voice matters as a constituent. Now is the time to have your say! Tell your legislator to vote YES for repeal in November.

Great Turnout to the Kickoff of ICADP's October Tour

More than 100 people showed up in Decatur last night for the kickoff of ICADP's October downstate speaking tour! The tour features the testimonies of both death row exonerees and murder victims' family members as they speak out against capital punishment and inspire members of the public to write letters to their legislators calling for repeal. We are excited about the turnout so far, and hope you can join the numbers at our next tour stop in Springfield on October 21st.
